Fish Oils Lower High Blood Pressure

A study from the Netherlands shows that fish oils lower high blood pressure. Researchers reviewed 90 studies measuring the effect of fish oils on blood pressure. Of these, 22 studies were double blind, meaning that neither the physicians nor the patients knew whether the patients were taking fish oils or placebos. More than one half gram per day of fish oil lowered high blood pressure.

Many previous studies show that high blood pressure is lowered by the DASH diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds and nuts, and restricting meat, chicken, and whole milk dairy products. The DASH diet is high in calcium, magnesium and potassium and low in sodium. Most cases of high blood pressure can be controlled by a diet that contains omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, seeds and whole grains, and the DASH diet based on plants and losing weight and exercising.
