Restrict Refined Carbohydrates And Fat To Lowerb Lood Pressure

An exciting study reported in the medical journal, Circulation, shows that a diet based on fruits and vegetables and restricting meat, poultry, bakery products and pastas, lowers high blood pressure significantly.

It is incredible that doctors still try to treat high blood pressure with low salt diets. Only a small percentage of North Americans are salt sensitive. Most will not raise blood pressure with dietary salt. Studies that show reduction of high blood pressure with a low salt diet show only a reduction of 1 to 4 mm of mercury which is hardly significant. Several studies show that a plant based, meat restricted diet lowers high blood pressure significantly. Furthermore, a low salt diets make whole grains taste awful so you won't eat them and the best way to lower high blood pressure is to substitute whole grains for refined carbohydrates in bakery products and pastas.

Having high blood levels of homocysteine markedly increases your risk for a heart attack and high blood pressure. Those people who eat the most whole grains, beans seeds and nuts have the lowest homocysteine levels, and the lowest blood pressures, which is good. This study shows that eating plants and restricting refined carbohydrates, meat and chicken lower high blood pressure. This is called the DASH study (Dietary Approach to Stop High Blood pressure).
